Clues on the River Parrett Trail

Lyn Sutterby.

Forced by the Vikings to spend the winter on the Island of Athelney, Alfred - King of the West Saxons - may well have been distracted by anxious thoughts.... how was he going to defeat his fierce opponents? In the story he burnt some cakes he was tending, but the scolding he received from the housewife roused him. He gathered his forces and went out and defeated his enemy; the last part we know is true.

* Find this clue on the stile by Athelney Bridge.
